The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has issued an update regarding the securing of loads in a Large Goods Vehicle (LGV).

As part of Mentor’s ongoing monitoring of updates to relevant guidance, we have been in correspondence with the DVSA to seek clarification. The updated guidance specifies the following:

You must not:

  • Attach more than one lashing to an anchorage point
  • Thread a lashing through an anchorage point and hook it back on itself

In response to our enquiry, the DVSA provided the following information:

It is advised not to attach more than one lashing to a single anchor point. This is because anchor points are typically rated for force applied in a straight line, and using multiple lashings can create angled forces that exceed their intended capacity. Additionally, attaching multiple straps can reduce the effectiveness of the anchor point by pulling in opposing directions and increasing the overall force applied.

In some cases, such as when the load is relatively light and the angles are favourable, using more than one lashing on an anchor point may be acceptable. However, in these situations, it is essential for the loader or operator to carry out a risk assessment to ensure the method is safe and appropriate. A new section in the relevant guide provides further detail on conducting risk assessments and determining when they may be necessary.

It is essential that this information is communicated to all staff members who have previously completed our Load Security course.

The new guidance issued by the DVSA now supersedes certain elements that were included in the earlier version of our course. As a result, it is important for all relevant personnel to be made aware of these updates to ensure that they are aligned with the latest requirements.

Ensuring continued compliance

We have taken the necessary steps to revise and update our course presentation accordingly following the release of the above information, with the changes made effective immediately. We have carefully reviewed all aspects of the content to ensure it fully aligns with the updated requirements. This revision has been made to ensure continued compliance with the latest guidance and standards.
