The UK Material Handling Association (UKMHA) is urging businesses to get involved in National Forklift Safety Day 2021, taking place Tuesday 8th June.

This year’s campaign theme is the importance of accredited Thorough Examination, accompanying updated GN28 guidance from UKMHA founder member BITA, regards examinations and safety inspections.

You can get involved by visiting the dedicated website where you can find information, guidance and downloads to read, share and put into practice on your site. Download a media pack here, complete with data sheets, posters, email banners and more.

Training for those carrying out examinations

If you’re responsible for forklift safety on your site, don’t forget that those carrying out these examinations require sufficient and appropriate training in the basic operation of the truck.

If your Competent Person isn’t an operator by trade, they don’t need to complete a full course of basic training, but they will need to complete a restricted ‘engineers’ course, to ensure that they can safely and efficiently use the machine functions required for testing (i.e. simple manoeuvring and the lifting/lowering of the forks).

Mentor provide specific courses for this purpose – if you would like more information, please contact us here.
